A Must for Lunar New Year First Day

 (5 min read)

The Year of the Ox is welcomed today and this is spring festival celebrated by  the Chinese, Koreans and the Vietnamese.

I believe the Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese are already ready to welcome the first day of the new lunar year. There is still celebrations going on though muted because of the covid situation.

Forget the covid thing and let me talk about a must of yours for the first day of the lunar new year. I believe that you have something which you will do every year on this first day.

It can be out of habit, out of tradition or out of convenience. For myself, it will have to be having the first meal that is vegetarian. This annual ritual was taught to me by my grandmother from childhood and followed till this day.

Why vegetarian? First and foremost, it has to do with the Chinese dialectical group that I belong to. You have to know that not all Chinese are the same. The Chinese disapora today came from a land mass of about 3.7 million square miles. Naturally, the Chinese from the south and the north are different. in many ways including the diet.

Secondly  being vegetarian at the beginning of the year reminds me to be mindful of showing mercy for the whole year (in actions, in words, towards other human being and towards animals).

Thirdly consuming a first vegetarian meal is healthy for the start of the new year and I simply love it.
