One Line One Universe

One line and the Yi Jing - Chinese Oracle (3 min read)

When I first came across the Chinese Oracle, Yi Jing or I Ching, I was intrigued by the system of divination that the ancient Chinese sages invented.  The Chinese Oracle uses the system of 8 trigrams which later developed into 64 hexagrams.

Reading the 64 hexagrams can be pretty challenging and the outcome is another challenge which one has to grapple with.  Moreover, the outcome may not be one has hoped for as it is mostly philosophical.  Modern men are not interested in the wisdom of what Yi Jing offers but the short term benefits of "What benefits can I reap from it?"

We tend to look at the outside world for answers and get excited by the real and fake gurus of the outside world. Little do we know that the answers are all within us and we have the Universe in us.

The one line which gives the formation of the 8 Trigrams and the 64 hexagrams is the Yang line as well as the Yin line.  In our body, we find the Yin and Yang on us and within us.  Look at our hands and we get the Yang and the Yin together.

For instance, we have a thumb which is Yang and the other four fingers which are the Yin.  On our thumb, we have 2 phalanges. On our other four fingers, we have 3 phalanges. Yang numbers are odd numbers while yin numbers are even numbers.  Our head is Yang while our legs are Yin and the list goes on.

When I wrote earlier about the notion that in Yang, there is Yin; it really means the Tai Ji which moves from the yang to the yin and the yin to the yang.  The picture of the Tai Ji is often mistaken as a religious or superstitious symbol but it is just the depiction of energies of the yin and yang.  To understand the Tai Ji, one needs to look at the image as a moving one.
